Garlic Barrier is a very strong liquid garlic extract that mixes with water and is sprayed on farm and garden plants to keep insects off. The garlic used in Garlic Barrier is a very powerful variety which is much more potent than the garlic found in grocery stores (in fact, our lab people here refer to it as "super garlic").
It imparts no garlic taste on any crops or plants that are sprayed. The odor of garlic in the air or on the plant disappears in about 30 minutes. Garlic Barrier is listed by OMRI as suitable for organic farm use. It's marvelous for farm, home garden and lawn care use and completely safe around people, pets, animals and fish when used as directed.
Garlic Barrier does a wonderful job of keeping birds from eating fruit crops like cherries, pears, apples, figs and berries. In cherry trees, dilute one gallon of Garlic Barrier in 300 gallons of water and spray the solution on the trees to keep birds away from your fruit for a week. Only spray the trees when the fruit begins to ripen and the first birds appear. Garlic Barrier leaves no taste in the fruit at all and there is no re-entry time so you can spray up to the day of harvest.
Garlic has a natural sulfur which repels mosquitoes. Spraying garlic to keep insects away is not something new, farmers and master gardeners have been doing it for many generations.
Since mosquitoes are soft-bodied insects the garlic juice can be very toxic to them in increased concentrations. The juice does not harm humans, pets or plants, but to mosquitoes it can be deadly. The odor of garlic chases them away for as long as they can detect the odor. The odor of sprayed garlic juice becomes undetectable to humans within minutes, but mosquitoes can detect odor as much as 10,000 times better than a human. So even though you can't smell the garlic, they can and they will stay away from the sprayed area for up to a month or longer. If the mosquitoes aren't in your yard, they can't get into your house.
Additionally, Garlic Barrier, when mixed with canola oil (available at your local grocery store) plus the water, coats any standing water in the area with a very thin film of natural oil. This oil suffocates the which can develop in standing water. Unlike harmful chemicals, Garlic Barrier is a natural insect repellent that doesn't kill bees or butterflies and is completely safe for children, fish, birds, dogs, cats and other pets. Be careful of traditional chemical pesticides, they can kill more than mosquitoes.
Generally, four applications are enough for the entire mosquito season. Even in the heaviest of infestations the gallon size is almost always enough for the entire year for most homes - including areas where the mosquito is the state bird.
Garlic Barrier can be applied to foliage or in the furrow on top of the seeds as they are planted. Early application to the seeds helps repel nematodes or other grubs from the seedlings. If applying to foliage, always spray early, between 7:30 AM and 11:00 AM, when plants have their stomata open so that more Garlic BarrierAG+ will be absorbed.
Row Crops, Flowers and Ornamentals:
Mix 1 gallon of Garlic Barrier with 100 gallons of water. Covers 10 - 12 acres before insects arrive. Begin when plants are 4 - 6 inches and repeat every 2 weeks as needed.
If you have a strong infestation, increase the strength of Garlic Barrier up to 5%. During active infestations, spray every 2 - 3 days as needed until insects are gone.
Apples, Plums, Pears, etc.:
Mix 1 gallon of Garlic Barrier with 250 gallons of water. This mix provides coverage for up to 5 acres. Spray before blossom, after blossom, after bees have left and then again in 30 days.
Greenhouses
Mix 1 gallon of Garlic Barrier with 10 gallons of water. Use a cold fogger and fog all plants weekly as needed to prevent infestation. If infestation already exists, make 2 quick sprays 72 hours apart.
Turf Grass:
Mix 1 gallon of Garlic Barrier with 50 gallons of water. Apply at a rate of 10 gallons per acre. Do not water for one day after application.
Plant Parasitic Nematodes, Root Maggots and Beetles:
Put Garlic Barrier and water into furrow as you plant, either on top of seed or in furrow before inserting transplant. Use 1 gallon of Garlic Barrier mixed with 50 gallons of water. Put enough in each furrow to thoroughly dampen the soil.
Application Timing: Apply as a preventative treatment prior to insect infestation. Make the first application at foliar emergence and repeat on a 10-14 day spray schedule to maintain the repellency effect.
Rate of Application: Set equipment to thoroughly wet foliage. Spray over 10 acres at rate of 10 gallons per acre for 1:99 mixture. Spray at a rate of 5 gallons per acre for 1:50 mixture. If spraying orchards (trees), use any amount of water but 25.5 ounces per acre of Garlic Barrier AG+ mixed in water. Garlic Barrier AG+ is compatible with most surfactants and conventional pesticides. The most effective ambient temperature range for application is 60-85°F.
